Back Pain

Treatment in the home
  • Keep moving- Do not go to bed!
  • If the pain is very severe you may find it helpful to lie flat on a floor or firm bed for 2-3 days at the most
  • Take either ibuprofen or paracetamol in recommended doses
  • Heat the affected area with a hot water bottle
  • Do not lift any heavy objects
  • Try to ensure your posture isn’t causing any strain to your back

When to go to the doctors
  • If your back pain is severe
  • If you are over 65
  • If you are taking corticosteroids (drugs used for treating arthritis)
  • If you have sciatica (pain/numbness/tingling in one leg extending below the knee)
Go IMMEDIATELY if;
  • Along with your back pain you have numbness/tingling in perianal area (around the anus) or have any difficulty passing urine
  • The onset of pain is severe and is with stiffness and has no apparent cause
