Cuts and grazes

Treatment in the home
For cuts
  • Apply pressure to the cut for 2 to 3 minutes to stop the bleeding (or until the bleeding stops
  • Clean the area around the cut using a mild antiseptic wiping outwards or away from the wound
  • Apply a plaster to the area bringing the edges of the cut together so that it knits quickly
  • Keep dry for 1-2 days
For grazes
  • Carefully clean the graze using a mild antiseptic
  • Leave the graze uncovered, allowing a scab to form. Covering it may mean the dressing will stick to the scab or make it soggy and infected.

When to consult your doctor
  • If a cut is deep and the edges cannot be pulled together with a dressing
  • If a cut was caused by something dirty or rusty
  • If there is a significant amount of blood being lost go to A&E
