Earache

Treatment in the home

·        Rest in a warm room
·       
Take pain killers in recommended doses
·       
Do not put drops into a discharging ear unless instructed by your doctor
·       
If there is any discharge clean any from the opening of the outer-ear canal and ear lobe but do not try to clean inside the outer-ear canal (see picture below)
·       
If there is discharge allow the discharge to drain out.
·       
Do not let water enter the ear

When to go to the doctor’s

·        If a baby is in pain.
·        If earache persists after four to eight hours rest
·        If there is discharge in the ear
·        If pain develops in an ear that is already discharging
·        If ear problems develop after flying, diving or a respiratory infection
·        If in children it is accompanied by a fever
