Fever
Treatment in the home
- Rest in a warm (not hot) room
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Take painkillers of the aspirin type. Do not give aspirin to under 12s.
- Sponge the patient with tepid water if their temperature is above 39°C (104°F)
- For a child;
- Sponge the child down with lukewarm water and let the water dry on the body
- Get your child to drink plenty of fluids
- Keep the room at a comfortable temperature
- Do not over-wrap small children.
- You can give children paracetamol medicine such as Calpol or Disprol according to the instructions on the bottle
When to go to the doctor’s
- If a baby under one year has a temperature
- If fever persists for more than three days in an adult
- If severe shivering, shaking and chattering of teeth occur with fever.
- If the patient’s travelled to a tropical area in the last three months
Go IMMEDIATELY if;
- A baby has a temperature of over 40C (104F)
- Accompanied by neck stiffness, drowsiness, a rash that doesn’t disappear when pressed under a glass, or if the patient dislikes the light
