Fever

Treatment in the home
  • Rest in a warm (not hot) room
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Take painkillers of the aspirin type. Do not give aspirin to under 12s.
  • Sponge the patient with tepid water if their temperature is above 39°C (104°F)
  • For a child;
    • Sponge the child down with lukewarm water and let the water dry on the body
    • Get your child to drink plenty of fluids
    • Keep the room at a comfortable temperature
    • Do not over-wrap small children.
    • You can give children paracetamol medicine such as Calpol or Disprol according to the instructions on the bottle   
When to go to the doctor’s
  • If a baby under one year has a temperature
  • If fever persists for more than three days in an adult
  • If severe shivering, shaking and chattering of teeth occur with fever.
  • If the patient’s travelled to a tropical area in the last three months
Go IMMEDIATELY if;
  • A baby has a temperature of over 40C (104F)
  • Accompanied by neck stiffness, drowsiness, a rash that doesn’t disappear when pressed under a glass, or if the patient dislikes the light
