Indegestion

Treatment in the home
  • Try and work out what foods make the pain worse and avoid them
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Try to avoid stress
  • Have regular meals
  • Raise the head of your bed
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid taking aspirin unless instructed to do so by your doctor
  • Rest in a chair
  • Take antacids or half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water
  • Drink fluids in small amounts
When to go to the doctors
  • If symptoms are persistent or getting progressively worse
  • If there is abdominal pain, cough or loss of appetite
  • If you are aged over 45
  • If you have been taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen) or aspirin
  • Immediately if;
  • You have had a sudden onset of indigestion or it is related to exercise
  • Your indigestion is accompanied by weight loss or vomiting
