Nosebleeds

Treatment in the home
  • Sit upright in a chair with the head slightly forward and firmly pinch the soft part of the nose for at least 15 minutes. Swallow or spit out any blood going down the back of the nose. Breathe through the mouth. After 15 minutes release the nostrils and sit quietly. If bleeding restarts pinch the nose again.
  • When bleeding stops, sit quietly or lie down for a while. Do not blow the nose for at least three hours.
When to go to the doctors
  • Go to your local GP if nosebleeds are a recurrent problem
Go IMMEDIATELY to your local accident and emergency if
  • The bleeding doesn’t stop within 20 minutes, particularly in an elderly person or if so much blood is lost the patient becomes pale or dizzy.
  • The patient has a blood disorder (e.g. they are a haemophiliac) or are taking anticoagulants (drugs that prevent the blood clotting such as warafin).
