Vomiting

Treatment in the home
  • Rest
  • Take sips of water only
  • Eat nothing
  • As the stomach settles take semi-solid food such as dry biscuits, bread or breakfast cereals before gradually returning to a normal diet
When to go to the doctors
  • If vomiting is accompanied by continuous stomach pain
  • If vomiting lasts for more than 24 hours
  • If a vomiting child has a temperature of more that 38ºC or 100ºF
  • If there is blood in the vomit
  • If there is also severe diarrhoea or muscle cramps
  • If vomiting settles but diarrhoea persists for more than 5 days
  • If a child cannot keep down even a very small amount of fluid
  • If a child or baby appears to be floppy
