Vomiting
Treatment in the home
- Rest
- Take sips of water only
- Eat nothing
- As the stomach settles take semi-solid food such as dry biscuits, bread or breakfast cereals before gradually returning to a normal diet
When to go to the doctors
- If vomiting is accompanied by continuous stomach pain
- If vomiting lasts for more than 24 hours
- If a vomiting child has a temperature of more that 38ºC or 100ºF
- If there is blood in the vomit
- If there is also severe diarrhoea or muscle cramps
- If vomiting settles but diarrhoea persists for more than 5 days
- If a child cannot keep down even a very small amount of fluid
- If a child or baby appears to be floppy
